The Morning Call, Allentown, PA Atlantic City Ballet/’A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ ~ Diana Morse. Though his tales are timeless, Shakespeare’s English is complex enough to cause some to avoid his plays. Not the case, however, for the Atlantic City Ballet, which presented the Bard’s comic “A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ last Saturday at the Scottish Rite Cathedral, Allentown. The company’s lithe and beautiful troupe of more than 20 dancers, augmented with students from Emmaus-based Coral Nolan Academy of Dance, cleverly spun the enchanting tale of mismatched lovers, a well-meaning forest sprite, and…an ass. Blond bombshell Jerry Pines as Oberon pulled off one gorgeous grand jete after another, and was a handsome complement to Janelle de Ment’s Titania. Tamara de Ment was an extremely Puck-ish Puck. The striking brunette’s innocent yet mischievous facial expressions alone spoke volumes. Pines and de Ment hit comic highs when Puck’s error causing havoc among lovers Helena, Lysander, Demetrius and Hermia (danced by Jing-Jia Qian, Eduard Constantinescu, Jean Marc Ault-Riche and Suzanne Silver, respectively) is discovered. Pines’ artful “lift and shake” paired with de Ment’s wild flails equaled comedy of Shakespearean proportions. DaVon Doane as Bottom played a convincing and loveable ass. Though surprised by the spell transforming him into the beast, Doane quickly took advantage of the part, romancing Titania with mincing yet powerful steps en pointe. Atlantic City Ballet’s productions are a welcome addition to the Valley’s professional art scene.
